Botanical Garden at Royal Victoria Park, Bath

Want to know a secret? Spring is the very best time to visit the legendary spa city of Bath and the surrounding Somerset countryside. The city’s iconic stone architecture literally sparkles in the sunshine as the city parks burst into life with blooms – and you can enjoy all the local sights and activities without having to cope with the heavy peak-summer-season tourist crowds.

As the days get longer think about treating yourself to a great getaway in Bath, and let us put you up in comfort at Toghill House Farm while you unwind and make the most of glorious springtime in Bath. It’s even better because we are members of the Bath reward scheme which offers our guests discounts in restaurants, attractions, spas and shops in the city!

Here are some tips for how best to spring into Bath:

Discover Bath’s Blooming Gardens

Springtime in Bath is synonymous with gardens in full bloom, and few places showcase this better than the Botanical Garden at Royal Victoria Park. Nestled within one of the city’s most grand green spaces, the Botanical Garden comes alive between March and June with vibrant displays of spring flowers, ornamental trees, and themed planting areas. It’s a tranquil spot for a morning stroll, just moments from the city centre, and a lovely place to pause with a coffee while surrounded by colour and birdsong.

Another standout is Prior Park Landscape Garden, a magnificent 18th-century garden designed by Capability Brown. In spring, its sweeping lawns, blossoming trees, and reflective lakes feel especially romantic. The iconic Palladian Bridge, framed by fresh greenery, offers one of the most photographed views in Bath. The gentle slopes and winding paths make it a rewarding visit for those who enjoy scenic walks with a strong sense of history.

Closer to the heart of the city, Sydney Gardens offers a more quiet, intimate  experience. Once a fashionable pleasure garden frequented by Jane Austen, it’s now a peaceful place to wander among spring flowers, ornamental bridges, and tree-lined paths, with the Kennet & Avon Canal running alongside.

For something slightly different, the American Museum & Gardens combines world-class exhibitions with beautifully designed gardens overlooking the Limpley Stoke Valley. In spring, the gardens truly shine, with tulips, blossom, and sweeping views that stretch far beyond the city.

Scenic Spring Walks and Fresh-Air Adventures

Spring is the perfect season to explore Bath’s famous walking routes, and the Bath Skyline Walk is a must for anyone who enjoys the outdoors giving you a whole new perspective on this heritage city and its surroundings. This circular trail takes you through ancient woodland, wildflower meadows, and open countryside, all while offering breathtaking views back across the city’s honey-coloured rooftops. It’s well signposted, manageable for most fitness levels, and especially rewarding on clear spring days when the landscape feels newly awakened.

For a gentler walk, the towpath along the Kennet & Avon Canal provides a flat, picturesque route ideal for leisurely strolls. Heading east from the city, you’ll eventually reach the enchanting Iford Manor Gardens, known for its romantic design, terraced layout, and springtime planting (open from April 2026). The journey itself is part of the pleasure, with narrowboats, waterside wildlife, and quiet countryside views along the way.

Beyond Bath, spring opens up even more opportunities for day trips into the surrounding countryside. Westonbirt Arboretum, just under an hour away, is world-famous for its trees, and spring brings carpets of bluebells, magnolias, and early blossom. Meanwhile, Dyrham Park offers wide-open deer park walks, historic parkland, and seasonal flowers set against the backdrop of a grand 17th-century house.

Sightseeing in the Spring Sunshine

Bath’s architectural landmarks feel especially inviting in spring, when you can explore at a relaxed pace without contending with the summer crowds and heat radiating from the pavements. Strolling along the curve of the Royal Crescent, wandering through The Circus, and exploring the surrounding streets is a joy when the city is bathed in soft spring light.

A boat trip along the River Avon is another delightful way to see the city from a different perspective. As trees line the riverbanks with fresh green leaves and blossoms, the gentle pace of the water offers a peaceful contrast to sightseeing on foot.

No visit to Bath would be complete without stepping into its rich history. The Roman Baths remain one of the city’s most compelling attractions, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient life and culture. Nearby, Bath Abbey beckons for a spiritual time-out,  impresses with its soaring fan-vaulted ceilings, intricate stonework, and tranquil atmosphere—perfect for a reflective moment during your stay.

Literary fans can also enjoy a visit to the Jane Austen Centre, celebrating the author’s connection to the city and providing insight into Regency-era Bath, which feels especially vivid when experienced in spring. Feel free to wear your smartest spring bonnet!

Relax and Unwind with Rooftop Spa Views

After a day of exploring gardens and walking trails, there’s no better way to unwind than at Thermae Bath Spa. Its (adults only) rooftop pool is a standout experience at any time of year, but spring brings a special charm. Soaking in naturally warm thermal spring water while breathing in fresh air and enjoying views across this fabled city’s rooftops is both invigorating and deeply relaxing.

As temperatures rise but the air remains crisp, open-air bathing feels especially luxurious. It’s an experience that perfectly captures the essence of Bath: historic, indulgent, and effortlessly soothing.
