Here at Toghill House Farm we are often delighted to host horse racing fans – being situated on the doorstep of Bath Racecourse. However, we get racy visitors of another sort too, booking to stay with us when they come to watch or participate in events nearby. We are a convenient pit stop for petrolheads – anyone who is keen on motorsport and the very exciting goings-on at the Castle Combe Circuit, a mere nine miles up the road from us (via the A420).

The Unique Castle Combe Circuit

The race track in Castle Combe is unique in many ways. First there’s its setting in a natural amphitheatre in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty alongside a picturesque “chocolate box” village. Add to that a long history steeped in motorsport traditions and its challenging layout and you’ve got a racing circuit to be reckoned with.

You don’t have to be a race car or bike connoisseur to appreciate the Castle Combe 1.85 mile long circuit with its daring blend of high-speed straights and tight, technical corners. The iconic Quarry Corner – a blind right-hander – is a particular test of driver skill and courage. Whether you visit this circuit as a spectator or driver there are plenty of thrills in store.

A Bumpy Road for Castle Combe Motor Racing

While Castle Combe has settled into a successful business staging a regular variety of championship saloon, sports car and motorcycle races, as well as some impressive car shows and numerous other events and activities (even a popular car boot sale), it has had to fight for its place as a valuable local venue.

Before we treat you to a run-down of the highlights to look forward to at the Castle Combe circuit this year, perhaps you’d appreciate a potted history:

The circuit evolved from a decommissioned RAF wartime airfield, with the first race taking place in July 1950, organised by the property’s then owners, the Gorst family, with the Bristol Motorcycle & Light Car Club.

It took off as a motorcycle racing venue, seeing plenty of action over the years until it was converted for motor racing some years later. It’s heyday was during the 1950s and 1960s, continuing as a significant venue for thrilling prominent and prestigious championships series into the 70s and 80s and beyond.

Like most race venues it has had its fair share of tragedies and triumphs. In 1997 an accident that involved the death of a spectator forced the redesign of the track layout to slow cars down. This came just after Nigel Greensall established a lap record of 130.93 mph in his Tyrrell 022.

What’s On at Castle Combe Circuit this Season?
