Visiting the Bath Literature Festival this May? Stay nearby to our quaint B&B in the North Somerset countryside. The literature festival promises an exciting lineup of the nation’s finest writers, poets, historians and comedians.
Talks and discussions delve into the defining challenges of our time, alongside events celebrating thriller novels, a handful of literary legends, and a generous helping of glamour and romance.
Whether you’re drawn to discussion or simply the joy of being surrounded by fellow book lovers, the Bath literature festival has something to offer every kind of reader.
A Festival for Every Kind of Book Lover
This year’s programme is nothing short of spectacular. Whether your passion lies in literary fiction, history, biography, poetry, or current affairs, there is something on the bill to make you reach for your diary.
Leading the fiction charge is Maggie O’Farrell, celebrated author of Hamnet, alongside Booker Prize-winning novelist Douglas Stuart and beloved romantic fiction writer Katie Fforde.
For those who like their stories with a little more suspense, thriller maestro Anthony Horowitz is also on the bill, alongside Australian crime writer Jane Harper.
History enthusiasts will be equally well served. Tom Holland, one of Britain’s most popular historians, joins Clement Knox discussing The Scramble for America.
Big Ideas, Big Names
The festival has always been a place where the conversation extends well beyond books and 2026 is no exception. Former Chancellor Sajid Javid will speak on identity and belonging, while a panel of experts will tackle some of the most pressing concerns of our time.
Equally enticing are events exploring the worlds of Jane Austen and James Bond, as well as biographical talks on iconic figures including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth II, and artists Gwen and Augustus John.
For a lighter touch, comedian Marcus Brigstocke and food campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall bring wit and warmth to the festival.
Walking Tours
Beyond the main stage, the festival offers a rich programme of walking events. There are also ten themed guided walking tours of Bath to choose from, covering everything from the city’s botanical gardens and Bath on Screen to the stories of the Bath Blitz.
It’s a wonderful way to discover the city’s stories on foot and a perfect complement to all those hours spent in the Guildhall listening to them being told.
